Intent Statement:
The intent of Reading at The Trinity Catholic Academy is to develop confident and skilled readers who have a deep love for literature and a strong understanding of reading in all subject areas. We teach Read Write Inc. Phonics with confidence and fidelity. We aim to build strong reading foundations that enhance pupils’ language and comprehension skills, as well as develop their social and emotional well-being.
Implementation Statement:
At The Trinity Catholic Academy, we implement a structured approach to reading that prioritises embedding phonics, vocabulary, and comprehension skills throughout all phases in the school. We also develop and maintain high-quality and diverse reading materials to promote a love for literature and a desire to engage with a range of text types.
Through regular assessments and formative feedback, we aim to identify pupil’s reading needs promptly and deliver targeted teaching, allowing us to ensure every pupil is making progress. We recognise the importance of involving parents and carers in pupils’ education and provide them with regular updates on reading progress, provide regular reading homework and work with them to build home reading habits.
Impact Statement:
The implementation of Reading at The Trinity Catholic Academy has resulted in a positive impact. Pupil’s love for reading and their confidence in their ability to read independently are evident through pupil feedback and assessment data. The school’s commitment to enhancing pupils’ comprehension and language skills throughout all subject areas further promotes pupil’s academic success and social and emotional well-being both inside and outside of school. Furthermore, the school’s diverse range of reading material has broadened pupils’ experiences, and their understanding of cultures outside their own. The regular engagement with parents and carers had led to increased support and has enhanced home learning. Overall, through our focus on reading, we aim to ensure our pupils develop a joy and love of reading, which sets them up for life beyond their school years.
