The Department for Education have said "Keeping our children safe and ensuring schools prepare them for life in modern Britain could not be more important."
The British values are :-
Below are the fundamental British Values that Schools should provide taken from the DfE document "Promoting fundamental British values as part of SMSC in schools" published November 2014. Below each statement is a description of what The Trinity School does:
1. Enable students to develop their self-knowledge, self-esteem and self-confidence.
We teach and support this from 3 upwards through:
2. Enable students to distinguish right from wrong and to respect the civil and criminal law of England.
Through our moral teaching in RE and Collective Worship, we teach what is right and wrong. We use the police on a regular basis and have tackled gangs, weapons and violence. Our KS2 pupils know what is legal and illegal i.e. stealing, racism, violence and bullying. The children had an input into the Code of Conduct and they wrote the strapline for the school Mission Statement.
3. Encourage students to accept responsibility for their behaviour, show initiative, and to understand how they can contribute positively to the lives of those living and working in the locality of the school and to society more widely.
Our Behaviour policy and Code of Conduct promote taking responsibility for our own actions and encourage reflection upon how to put things right. Children are aware of world issues through assemblies - they support the following - Cafod, Nugent Care, Poppy Appeal, Jospice, HCPT and are in regular contact with elderly in the community.
4. Enable students to acquire a broad knowledge of and respect for institutions and services in England.
In the curriculum we have given curriculum time to celebrating national events, First and Second World Wars, Remembrance Day, Holocaust Day, anti-slavery and events surrounding the Monarchy.
5. Further Tolerance and harmony between different cultural traditions by enabling students to acquire an appreciation of a respect for their own and other cultures.
Each term we study another faith such as - Judaism, Hinduism. We have had recent visits from Muslims who have shared their faith with pupils from 5-11.
6. Encourage respect for democracy and support for participation in the democratic processes, including respect for the basis on which the law is made and applied in England.
We have a successful school council who seek the views of all pupils. Their views have been acted on, be it in school meals, wet playtimes, play equipment, extra-curricular, library and outdoor environment. Our local MP has visited school 3 times to be questioned by pupils. We have had visits from councillors and The Lord Mayor.
