Our curriculum is designed to offer our children a broad and balanced curriculum, that promotes values necessary to live in our society today. We deliver the National Curriculum in a way which is appropriate to our city, our area and our school; a curriculum that offers rich opportunity and experience to set firm foundations to promote life-long learning.
Delivering a broad and balanced curriculum that engages, challenges and supports the needs of all our pupils is central to our foundation subject curriculum at The Trinity. We aspire to inspire our children to reach their potential. At the Trinity Catholic Primary School, we believe that our children deserve the best- both academically and personally.
Subjects covered in Key-Stage 1 (5-7) and Keystage 2 (7-11) are: RE, English, Maths, Science, Art and Design, Computing, Design and Technology, Geography, History, Music, P.E. and P.S.H.E. Keystage 2 children also learn Spanish.
A detailed curriculum overview has been mapped out for all foundation subjects across Keystages 1 and 2 (See links below). As with English, Maths and Science, we teach skills and knowledge leading to independent application. Year-on-year, these are built upon ensuring progression through the school. Wherever possible, opportunities to apply English and Maths skills are planned into foundation subjects.
English incorporates the teaching of reading, writing, spelling, phonics, grammar and handwriting.
The Phonic scheme used in EYFS and KS1 is Read Write Inc. Read Write Inc supports the development of children's reading skills by teaching children to identify, read and write phonemes and then blend these phonemes to read words. Some children in KS2 are also using this scheme to improve their skills.
Foundation subjects are assessed at the end of every topic using working towards, expected and greater depth criteria. This information is then used to plan for the application of skills across the curriculum. Opportunities are then given to revisit skills to help children achieve greater depth.
R.E. is taught following the Archdiocese agreed syllabus "Come and See". This reinforces the values of our school and promotes the Catholicity of our mission statement.
We have 2 fully-stocked libraries; 1 for KS1 and one for KS2. Both libraries are constantly updated to ensure that our children have access to exciting, high quality literature. Children can also access the Bug Club at home, an online reading scheme, to read books assigned according to each child's individual ability. Books are also available, to take home, so children without access to the internet can also read on a daily basis.
Early Years Foundation Stage
The Foundation Stage covers the development of children from the age of three to the end of reception year. It recognises that early childhood is an important stage of life and has its own particular needs.
The Foundation Stage acknowledges the many valuable skills children have developed and the importance of the role that parents play in this. Children learn best from first hand experience and learning is inter-related to help children to achieve to their full potential.
Children begin school having had a range of different experiences and they have learned a great deal, particularly from their families.
